相隔近7年再回老東家洋基隊球場，4天下來，看到球員、教練、媒體等老朋友，開心之餘，王建民本季要適應牛棚定位，維持手感是一大課題，但他不為自己找藉口，只盼想辦法做好調整，上場比賽拿出好表現。
雖然重回洋基球場，但皇家隊總教練約斯特表示，不覺得王建民因此有什麼特別的情緒反應；距離上1次登板，間隔7天，王建民坦言定位牛棚出賽時間不固定，「要自己想辦法調整好，教練要用時就可以發揮」。
王建民5月4、5日，連兩天出賽，拿出不錯表現，4日後援1局拿下勝投，5日投兩局失1分，但昨天表現投球內容不理想；王建民不為自己找藉口，「保送、安打，就是要算在自己頭上，所有藉口都不是藉口」。
面對不固定的出賽頻率，「每次熱身就等於練投，若接連幾場沒有上場、連熱身都沒有，自己也會另外找時間賽前練投個15至20球」，王建民也提到，練投時會盡量模擬比賽情境，「想像有打者在那邊」，幫助維持投球狀況。
